A Trick Question That’s Not Really a Trick—It’s a Word Game

Posted on March 2, 2026 by admin

The Puzzle
A handwritten challenge asks: “Name a sport that uses a ball but does not have ‘BALL’ in the name.” The catch is purely linguistic—your brain wants to jump to obvious sports, but you’re forced to check the word itself.

Why People Get Stuck
Many popular sports include “ball” directly: basketball, football, volleyball, baseball, handball. That makes people assume the riddle is trickier than it is. But the question only requires any sport that uses a ball where the sport’s name doesn’t contain the letters B-A-L-L in a row.

The Correct Answer
Tennis.
It clearly uses a ball, and the sport’s name does not include “ball.”

Other Answers That Also Work (Bonus Examples)
If someone argues there’s more than one solution, they’re right. Examples include soccer, golf, cricket, rugby, bowling, dodge, and many more—because the riddle’s rule is about the name, not the equipment.

Bottom Line
The cleanest, most widely accepted response is TENNIS—fast, obvious, and fully matches the rule.
