Why You Should Open Your Washing Machine Once a Month

Why You Should Open Your Washing Machine Once a Month
Most people load their washing machines and press start without giving much thought to what happens inside. But there’s one small part that plays a big role — the washing machine filter. This often-overlooked component quietly traps lint, hair, and detergent residue from every cycle. When it’s left uncleaned for too long, it can lead to musty odors, soap buildup on clothes, and even extra strain on the machine.

The good news is that keeping it clean takes less than ten minutes once a month — a small effort that pays off over time. Cleaning your washing machine’s filter regularly helps keep your laundry fresh and your appliance running efficiently. When residue clogs the filter, water doesn’t drain properly, leaving detergent and moisture behind.

This trapped buildup can create lingering smells or reduce cleaning performance. Over time, your washer may start to sound louder or take longer to complete cycles. A quick monthly check can prevent these issues and help extend your machine’s lifespan. To do it safely, always turn off and unplug the machine first. Most front-load washers have a filter behind a small panel near the bottom, while top-load models often hide it inside the drum.
